What is 420?

420 is synonymous with cannabis. It can also refer to the time of the day to consume cannabis (4:20 am or pm), the date April 20th – a date that has come to be a celebration of cannabis. 

How did 420 come to be associated with cannabis?

Once upon a time, in 1971, a group of friends at San Rafael High School in San Francisco decided to look for a rumored abandoned cannabis field. As they searched for the field in the forest of Point Reyes Peninsula, they smoked copious amounts of weed but were unsuccessful in finding the field. The adventure happened to be at 4:20 pm. 

This became the friend group’s code word for consuming cannabis. One of the friends eventually went on tour with The Grateful Dead, and “420” took off. It became popularized in the cannabis community, and now April 20th has become the official holiday for cannabis worldwide. 

What does “420 friendly” mean?

This essentially means “accepting of cannabis use.” You may see it in dating bios or on rental property listings.
